How to bless your house: A simple prayer walk

By His Glow, a 3-minute read

The boxes are still taped shut. The rooms echo. Before you unpack, you want this house to belong to God. A prayer walk is a simple way to do it.

“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”Psalm 127:1

What you need

  • Ten quiet minutes
  • Your Bible, or the verses below
  • Anyone who lives in the house with you

The walk, room by room

  1. Front door. Put your hand on the door. Pray for every person who will walk in. Read: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15)
  2. Kitchen. Pray for the meals and the talks at this table. Thank Him for daily bread.
  3. Living room. Pray for peace when you are tired, and grace when you don't agree.
  4. Each bedroom. Pray over the person who sleeps there by name. Read: “The LORD bless thee, and keep thee.” (Numbers 6:24)
  5. Back at the door. Turn on the first lamp. Read: “The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee.” (Numbers 6:25)

A prayer for the first night

Lord, this house is Yours. Fill every room with Your peace. Let all who live here, and all who visit, feel welcome and feel You. Amen.

You don't have to say it perfectly. God hears a simple prayer said in an empty room. That first night, when the lamp comes on, this house is already home.
